Is Marvai (Clams) Going Towards Extinction? Click To Know

February 13:  The number of clams, mussels and oysters along coastal Karnataka which is being used as food by sea food lovers, is now under threat of disappearing from the coast of Karnataka within a few years.
A study by fisheries experts on the conservation and sustainability of marine, said there could be declining nutrients in the waters, sand mining, over-extraction of shells and changes in water temperature could be the reason.
As per the statistics, the clams of the coastline reached 12,462 tonnes in 2012, down from 7,361 tonnes in 2013, 6,681 tonnes in 2014 and 2000 tonnes in 2019. Previously clams were available in 10 sacks a day but now it is difficult to get 1 sack.
