July 10: Deepthika Puthran, a 17-year-old athlete from Mangalore has been selected to participate in the Commonwealth event to be held from September 15 to 21.
She has to remit Rs 2.4 lakh, which includes entry fee for one event per player towards cost of participation through the state association. She has to send in Rs 1.4 lakh before July 20 and the rest by August 30.
On July 1 she received a communication from Powerlifting India recognised by the sports ministry and affiliated to the International Powerlifting and Asian Powerlifting Federation. Even though she was excited to be a part of this event, the worry of funding started immediately.
Her cousins suggested her to tweet to Union minister Kiren Rijiju for financial assistance. After tweeting to Union Minister she received a favourable reply from the minister, asking her to fill forms on the website — yas.nic.in. The minister, in his tweet, mentioned that he has instructed the SAI (Sports Authority of India) to contact her. SAI officials have even contacted Deepthika regarding her request.
Mangalorecity.in wishers Deepthika all the very best for the event.
