Dakshina Kannada DC Mullai Muhilan to Take up The Issue of Installing Doors Mandatorily in City Buses

The Dakshina Kannada district administration had mandated that all buses registered since 2017 must install doors without exception to safeguard bus passengers. Though three months have passed since the directive the city buses have failed to adhere to the order  and are still plying without doors.
DC Mullai Muhilan MP said that the process could not go through as desired, since the general elections were declared. Dakshina Kannada Bus Owners Association president Azeez Parthipady admitted that the DC had mandated doors for buses registered after 2017. But there’s confusion, since the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules,1989, exempts city buses from installing doors. Also it is an inconvenience for passengers and the public on the road while opening, and closing doors, since the city roads are narrow and do not have bus bays at all places.
Azeez said for new buses, they can install hydraulic doors, but that too would make opening them a dangerous projection, while opening or keeping them permanently open while operating in the city, due to the opening mechanism. Bus body code is an Automotive Industry Standards that has been prepared by the expert committee considering the safety features, comfort of seating, sleeper arrangement, stability and strength of the body.
