June 27: The state government has now proposed to draw water from the Linganamakki Reservoir to Bengalore. While the environmental activists in Shivamogga are strengthening their fight against the state government’s proposal, environmental activists from Dakshina Kannada have also extended support to the fight against the project.
Dinesh Holla, convener, Sahyadri Sanchaya who led the movement against the Yettinahole project said the government must have realised that the Yettinahole project has failed as there is no water in the Netravati river. Dinesh Holla mentioned that the the government decided to look at Sharavati and Aghanashini as there is no water in Netravati. The Yettinahole project has failed but the but government would not like to admit it. Holla mentioned that such projects are nothing but a disaster.
The yettinahole project was designed to provide drinking water to parched areas of Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Bengaluru Rural and Hassan districts by lifting 24.01tmft of water from Yettinahole a west flowing steam near Sakleshpur of Hassan district, and transport it through a pipeline and open canal running a distance of over 250 kilometres. The Yettinahole project has already destroyed a major portion of the Western Ghats. Kempuhole is vanishing. He mentioned that Unscientific construction has taken place between Kadagaravavalli and Maranahalli, and if the engineers have to rectify their mistakes, then the budget should also be increased. He mentioned that the Yettinahole project could be one of the reasons for drought in Dakshina Kannada.
