November 14: The unusual occurrence of huge landings of triggerfish and change in the composition of fish population is likely to affect the fishing communities.
Dr A Senthil, professor and dean (Fisheries), Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, College of Fisheries said that there has been a drastic change in the fish population, diversity and also the quantity of fish in the last 2-3 years.
Sardine and mackerel (Bhutai & Bangude) that were caught in huge quantities has declined. The same is true for the other commercial species like pink perch, pomfrets and seer.
He also mentioned that in the place of In place of the commercially important species, reef associated species is locally called as ‘Kargil fish’ or ‘Klaati’ has appeared in large quantities along the Karnataka coast. If the huge landing of Kargil continues, it will replace the commercially important fish along the Indian Coast. The changes in the climatic conditions are affecting the primary productivity in the coastal waters.
This ‘Kargil fish’ which is not fit for human consumption and have no commercial value.
