August 6: DCP Lakshmi Ganesh that Vamanjoor police arrested Joel Mariam Periera, 35-year-old farmer from Merlapadavu for illegally transporting the cattle.
Joel supplies milk to a local school and Merlapadavu dairy had had sold four male cattle a week ago.
As per the information received from Joel’s sister-in-law Tressie, Joel was with his wife and three children in Neerumarga market, when he was assaulted and taken in a vehicle by the police from Vamanjur police station. Tressie said that a week ago at 12 am, four policemen on the pretext of looking for a burglar knocked on the doors of Joel’s house. Joel’s wife had opened the door after looking at their identity cards. During the conversation, the policemen in plain clothes had accused them of slaughtering cows in their houses and transporting beef in a private autorickshaw, she added.
Tressie questioned if selling male cattle is a crime to which DCP Lakshmi Ganesh clarified that selling male cattle is not a crime, but a veterinary certificate is needed prior to the sale of cattle.
