Mangalore International Airport to Introduce Safety Measures: Will the Runway be Doubled?

October 24: Mangalore International Airport (MIA) in its move to enhance safety standards has taken up phase II work of parallel taxiway and widening has taken up phase II work of parallel taxiway and widening.
V V Rao, airport director at MIA said that Completion of the work on taxiway will ensure that the turnaround time for aircraft landing and taking off from MIA will be vastly reduced. Due to this, the passengers too will save on time with timely arrivals and tatake-offs, Rao mentioned.
he also said that the the airlines will save on pricey aviation turbine fuel that that they would otherwise have to use for taxiing and idling purposes.
Rao said that along with this, the move to double the runway safety basic strip area from the current width of 75metres, from the centre of the runway, will also ensure greater safety for aircraft using the airport. AAI has already commenced work on this project to a length of 1,500 metres on the Malavoor side, and the balance work will be executed once the Dakshina Kannada istrict administration hands over the remaining 1,000 metres land for which a public hearing has already been done.
