MCC Opens Central Market: Are The Merchants Allowed To Restart Business?

September 25: Merchants in central market were asked to shift to the APMC yard in Baikampady, during the lockdown after which the market was closed. The merchants had filed a petition in the high court, after which the court delivered a verdict in their favour. The high court has directed that business activities as per law should be allowed at the Central Market.
Following the high court order, Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has decided to open Central Market. The MCC has asked merchants, who have trade licenses, to open their shops at the Central Market. MCC officials have already communicated to all merchants that those who have trade license may meet the commissioner to reopen their shops. Merchants having license in others name will not be allowed to conduct business from Central Market. At present, only 30 out of 264 retail merchants  and 45 wholesale merchants have valid license in their own names. These merchants have been given permission to open shops at the central market.
