NITK’s Solar Power Charging Station ‘Urja’ to be Inaugurated on May 11: More About This
NITK Surathkal is all set to unveil Urja, the institute’s first-ever solar power charging station on May 11, Wednesday. The event will be inaugurated on Wednesday by Udaykumar R Yaragatti, director (in-charge), and presided over by Vijay Desai, dean alumni affairs and institutional relations (AAIR0, NITK Surathkal.
Project Urja involves solar powered charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, at the institution campus. At any given time, six e-cycles, two e-scooters or e-bikes and an e-car can be charged at this station. Non-NITK designed e-vehicles can pay and use the system, by using the IRIS app, that is designed in-house. The solar charging station is equipped with a 7.5kW inverter, eight numbers of 12v 165Ah C10 tubular batteries and 12 numbers of 400W solar panels.
Project head, Pruthviraj U, assistant professor, department of water resources and ocean engineering, said that the facility is the contribution of the NITK alumni of the batch of 1970. They decided to choose this project, and fund the same, by contributing from their savings. The project is executed by the Centre for System Design, NITK Surathkal. As many as 36 BTech, MTech and Phd students are involved in the project.
