August 5: Vishwanath Ganiga an auto driver and owner of a general store near Hemmadi towards Kollur road is also into farming for the past 15 years. Several farmers including Ganiga were unable to grow paddy due to the salt water diverted from from ‘Rajyadi river’ to the village for prawn cultivation, done by the president of Gujjadi Gram Panchayat. Therefore, Ganiga has come up with an innovating method in farming by using disposable paper cups to grow paddy.
He also mentioned that getting labourers is also a challenge in farming sector and paper cup is the best way to produce paddy for personal needs. While talking about the process, he said that it is simple:
Mix fertiliser with soil and fill half-cup with it put six to seven paddy seeds in a cup and again fill the mud and keep it in rain. The plant will start growing within 15 days. Next the paper cups have to be placed in the field which is ploughed using power tiller in lines. Soon the cup will melt and turn into fertilisers to the plant. This will reduce the labour cost needed for the seedling process. The fertilizer could be used once again after 15 days and allow the plants to grow thick and long.
He mentioned that the whole process will take two members and the harvesting could be done within the next two months.
