Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar on December 25, Sunday, clamped prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in Surathkal and adjoining areas to maintain law and order after Abdul Jaleel, 45, owner of a fancy shop was allegedly stabbed to death at Katipalla, near Surathkal, around 8 p.m. on December 24. The prohibitory orders which came into effect from 6 a.m. on December 25 are in place in the jurisdiction of Panambur, Surathkal, Bajpe, and Kavoor police station limits till 6 a.m. on December 27.

The movement of people in group of five and more, and carrying weapons have been banned during this period. The order exempted Christmas celebrations, religious programmes, and emergency services. As there are chances of miscreants moving in the night and creating trouble, commissioner has asked all industrial and commercial establishments coming under the four police stations to end the work shift of their employees by 6 p.m. In view of the tense situation, Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner M.R. Ravi Kumar has ordered closure of all liquor shops till 10 a.m. on December 27 to maintain law and order.

Jaleel was a resident of Fourth Block, Katipalla-Krishnapura, and the youngest of five brothers. He was attacked by two unknown persons at his shop. Though he escaped and tried to run away, the assailants followed and stabbed him. Jaleel succumbed to the injury at a private hospital in Mukka, near Surathkal. The autopsy was done at a private hospital at Kuntikana in the city.
