Second Season of Den Den National Level Sea Swimming Competition Will be Held on January 26 at Tannirbhavi Beach

The second season of Den Den national level sea swimming competition, will be held at Mangalore Surf Club beach, next to Tannirbhavi beach, on January 26, Sunday. Chirag Shambu, president of Mangalore Surf Club, said that more than 200 swimmers have registered for the competition. Swimmers will be swimming around the Den Den vessel, which drowned near the beach in 2007.

The competition will be held for categories namely 250 meters, 500 meters, 1.5 km and 3 km. This year new category of swimming 6 km has been added, which involves making two rounds of swimming around Den Den vessel. While those aged 10 and 11 will be allowed to swim for 500 meters, those aged between 12 and 14 years will swim for 1.5 km. Those aged between 15 and 17 years will take part in 1.5km and 3km swim categories. Those above 18 years will take part in 1.5 km, 3 km and 6 km categories. A total of 214 participants have registered, which includes those from Mangaluru, Bengaluru, Shivamogga and New Delhi. The competition will start at 6.30 a.m. and end around 11.30 a.m., Mr. Shambu said. Those swimming 1.5 km and beyond, it is made mandatory for them to swim with ‘Tow floats’. Participants can bring their own ‘Tow Floats’ or get the same from the club.

As many as 20 life guards will be on duty to ensure safety of all participants. Adequate care is taken to ensure that participants will not come close to vessel wreckage. Adequate number of speed boats and surf boats will also be deployed.
