September to be observed as World Alzheimer’s Month: These Activities are Planned.
August 30: Dr Prabha Adhikari, Head of Geriatric Medicine department, Yenepoya said, many who retire at the age of 60 or earlier, due to voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) idle away their time by watching television and making themselves vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease.
She mentioned alzheimer’s disease is increasing in India due to lack of awareness and stigma. She said that Alzheimer’s disease is on the decline in western countries due to `Active Aging’ which means to be socially active, to avoid consumption of alcohol and keep the brain active even after 60 years.
Mangalore Alzheimers Association (MAA) Founder President Jeradin D’Souza that a memory walk will be organised at Kadri Park on August 31, Saturday at 7.15 a. This will mark the beginning of a series of activities to mark World Alzheimer’s Month in September.
A documentary on Alzheimer’s disease will be screened, pamphlets on 10 warning signs of dementia, poster competition, quiz for elders, medical students on Alzheimer’s disease, activities for caregivers, training for health care professionals in memory assessment are some of the events planned in September. PAGE has also extended support to the ‘purple run’ being organised by Forum Mall on September 15.
World Alzheimer’s day will be observed at Town Hall on September 21 at 10.30 am.
