This Coastal City’s Iconic & Exclusive Book Stall at Mangalore Central Railway Station Closes Down

December 5: This coastal city’s iconic and exclusive book stall at Mangalore Central Railway station closed downed its shutters.  The book stall is believed to be as old as the station itself.
The stall was much sought by those who wanted books, magazines and newspapers for nearly a century.
Higginbotham’s storekeeper at Mangalore Central railway station K Raghavendra Rao, said Indian Railways revised the licence fee. This forced the management to rethink on the exclusive book stall model that once raked in business of up to Rs 25,000 per day. Due to emergence of e-commerce platforms selling books at discounted rates and advent of smartphones are some reasons, and people getting news updates on their mobiles through different apps, this stall’s business dipped to below Rs 5,000 per day for the last four to five years.
