This Government College Launches Wiki-e-learning Course For The Students: Click to Know

U B Pavanaja, editor of Vishva Kannada, and secretary, Karavali Wikimedians User Group, has partnered with the Pavanaja said as part of a research project they have launched a Wiki-e-learning course for the students with the support of Bhaskar Shetty S, principal, Dr G Shankar Govt College, and Ramachandra Adiga G, HoD of computer science at the college.

The project is sponsored by Wikimedia Foundation and the course is designed by Pavanaja of Karavali Wikimedians, working on Tulu, Kannada, and Konkani language Wikipedias and other Wikimedia (Free Knowledge) movement in the Indian languages that are used in coastal Karnataka and north Kerala. The sessions are held on weekends, so that regular classes are not affected. Hands-on training and practical sessions are conducted in computer labs. Every month, there will be lab sessions followed by online interactions. The resource persons will be checking students’ assignments, giving feedback, correcting their works where needed, giving more assignments, helping them wherever needed. There will be online meetups employing Google Meet or similar platforms. The whole certificate course will be a year-long activity.

At present 24 girl students have enrolled for the free course that is part of a research project on the effectiveness of Wikipedia in education, as a platform for improving cognitive ability among students. The students are involved in editing Kannada Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wiktionary and Wikiquote. Cognitive skills tests is conducted at the beginning, mid-term and at end of the course. So far, 620 articles have been created by the students, 954 articles have been edited and 17.6M total bytes have been added. The viewership for articles has been around 703K.
