They say even God helps who help themselves. Ram Bhat and Malathi Bhat are that couple who helped themselves amid adversities and today their hometel (home converted to a hotel) has decent patronage of students and people from all rung of the society. Thanks to this gritty and courageous couple, one can have a hearty meal of Konkani homely food at a cost as less as Rs. 60!
Ram was in the catering business in partnership with his brother, but after he had a slip disk problem he was laid up and could not work, but after he recovered he had no job, so Ram decided to turn his home into an eatery, and quickly turned his home kitchen into a decent eatery kitchen in 2007. Help was at hand in the form of his loving wife Malathi, who cooks all the dishes herself. She stood like rock alongside and dished out those delightful items from her Konkani home bred cooking.
Their hometel is situated between the Vaikunta Baliga College of law and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College in Kunjibettu Udupi. Soon the taste, cleanliness and bountiful quantities of each meal spread among the students and the people around and their clientele grew to reach nearly 100 pax per day.

Malathi and Ram recall that they prepared special Konkani sweet items during the festivals for those diners who could not be with their families. But after the COVID outbreak, their business is down by 40 per cent. But the gritty couple is not perturbed the least! “What is important is that we make a livelihood by right means and help others satiate their hunger in their difficult times.!”
In the normal times, each thali consists of chutney, podi, ghasi, curry, 3 types of rasam, sambar or Dali Thovve and if you get lucky on Fridays and special occasion they serve payasam. They also serve a generous serving of buttermilk and unlimited chapati and rice. Despite their hard times and day-long work in the kitchen and serving they say they are leading a contented life with their daughter Ramya who too lends a helping hand and they are just happy to feed so many mouths at affordable prices.
Their humble hometel may not be best looking but quality is never compromised they say with a smile.
