Udupi City Will Soon Have LED Streetlights: Proposal Approved by The Government
Udupi City Municipality has got an approval from the urban development department (UDD) to convert all conventional streetlights to LED lamps in the city limits. Udupi MLA K Raghupathi Bhat said that a proposal of the Udupi city municipality to replace conventional streetlights with LEDs at an estimated cost of Rs 24.25 crore through PPP model has been approved by the government.
The new LED streetlights, will be introduced in all the 35 wards of the city municipality. The LED street lights will have centralised control and monitoring system. More than 20,000 smart LED lamps will be used to replace old streetlights in the city. The project will help the municipality reduce power consumption by 80%, and thereby save 80% of the electricity bill. Currently, the city municipality has been spending an average of Rs 1.2 crore for the maintenance of streetlights.
