971 grams of gold worth Rs 34 lakh smuggled at Mangalore Airport

July 29: Two passengers attempted to smuggle 24-carat purity gold at Mangalore International Airport. Custom officcials at MIA prevented both passengers – one from Kumbala and the other from Kasaragod—who arrived in different flights from Dubai to Mangalore. Both the passengers were trying to smuggle 971.059 grams of gold valued Rs 33.99 lakh in the form of paste stashed in their rectums.
The officials seized 652 grams of gold valued at Rs 22.82 lakh from a youth from Kumbala, they recovered 319.059 grams gold out of 422 grams of substance stashed by the other youth from Kasaragod. Both the accused wee first time offenders.
The youth from Kumbala has been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
