Ban on fishing from June 1 to July 31: These are the main reasons

May 29: Ban on mechanised fishing in coastal areas for two months in the district will commence from June 1 to July 31. The mechanised boats will be anchored at the ports during this time for 61 days.

The ban has been imposed to ensure that the marine fish population multiplies, since this time is considered as the mating period. Since this is also the rainy season, it is considered risky for mechanised fishing. The of gap of two month will provide fishermen a break from their routine, and also gives them a chance to repair their boats and fishing nets.

The ban orders have been issued by the State government under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act. Along with this the Union Ministry for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries has banned fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone on the West Coast (from 12 to 200 nautical miles), including Karnataka, during June 1 to July 31. Any fishermen and fishing boats which violate the the ban would be fined under the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act. Along with this they will also become ineligible to receive diesel subsidy for their boats for over a year.
