Blue Flag certification work going on at Padubidri beach

May 8: The development works taken up at Padubidri beach as a part of Blue Flag certification is going on in full swing. The work is being taken up at a cost of Rs 8 crore on 5.88 acres of the beach near End Point connecting Padubidri-Hejamadi.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has conceived an integrated coastal management scheme-BEAMS (Beach Management Services) to reduce pollutants on beaches and to aspire and achieve such high international standards. Under BEAMS, Padubidri beach is selected for Blue Flag certification. A2Z Infraservices Ltd, Gurugram, which has secured the tender for development of the beach, has given a lot of importance to cleanliness of the beach. The work on cleaning the sea shore, covering two-kilometre stretch, is being carried out daily. At least 10 kg of garbage is collected daily by the workers.
Further, the work on construction of retaining wall to Kamini River, taken up by  KRIDL and minor irrigation, is  in progress. The work on road connecting End Point will commence shortly. The Mescom has taken up the work on installing electricity poles in the area. The work on solid and liquid waste management unit is also under progress. The State government has provided Rs 2.68 crore for various development works on the 5.88 acres of land, including river protection works, construction of jetty, jogging track, water facility, water sports activities and gardening. The work on fitness centre and play area for children will also be taken up. Already, materials have been procured for the construction of toilets and bathrooms. Solar panels will be installed to generate solar energy to supply to LED bulbs. Tourism department Assistant Director Anitha Bhaskar said that the works would be completed by May end. Measures will be taken to plant saplings on the sea shore during monsoon. The national jury for blue flag certification will come to inspect the beach either in September or October to give its approval.
