Cyber Crimes Are on Rise in Dakshina Kannada District: Beware & Follow These Points to Stay Safe

The number of cyber crimes in the district are on the rise as people are constantly becoming victims losing their hard earned money. Even though people in the district are educated, they are easily falling into the trap of fraudsters. Cyber crimes can be of different types like money being withdrawn from credit or debit cards, gift fraud, job frauds and many more. Sources say that several cases go unreported due to fear and self-respect.

A resident of Veerakambha in Bantwal allegedly lost Rs 9.79 lakh in a phased manner in a job scam. According to a complaint, the victim was working from home for a Bengaluru-based company. In a complaint, he stated that he saw a job recruitment advertisement on Facebook and contacted the Whatsapp number on December 18. The accused sent a job application form that he duly filled out. Following this, unknown persons asked him to transfer money to various bank accounts for visa processing charges, customs clearance and other changes through various means. These included cash deposit machines at ATMs, PhonePe and PayTM. A case has been registered at the CEN police station under Section 66 (D) of the IT Act and Sections 419 and 420 of the IPC.

The district and city police are creating awareness among the public to stay alert. Recently, the district police issued a few pamphlets to create awareness on cyber related offences.
