Indian Medical Association Mangalore Branch Urges Parents of School Children to Permit JE Vaccination

Indian Medical Association (IMA) Mangalore branch has urged all the parents of school going students to give consent and get the children vaccinated for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) at the earliest. Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito borne viral disease and the incidence of which has been rising in more than 10 districts of Karnataka. Once the infection develops, it presents with sudden onset of fever and nervous system related illness in the form of altered behaviour, unconsciousness, paralysis and fits. Usually, children below the age of 15 years are most affected.

IMA Mangalore branch president Dr Venugopala D stated that the Japanese encephalitis vaccine available in the country is very safe and provides protection with a single dose. There is no cure available for this disease once the infection has set in. Hence, preventing this disease is of utmost importance to save the children from this dreaded illness. The only way this disease can be tackled is by vaccination, he added.
