Inscription belonging to Vijayanagara empire found
May 10: An inscription, belonging to Vijayanagar empire period, has been found on the premises of Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple at Chandkooru in Belthangady taluk.
Retired professor from SDM College in Ujire Dr Y Umanath Shenoy has said that the inscription was written on the direction of Veeradevaraya Maharaja on January 27, 1417. It is related to the donation of land to the temple by the devotees and also highlights the extent of the land donated. It mentions about the donation of land to the temple by Banda Arasa, members of Nada Guthu, a few Brahmins and land owners. The inscription has a reference to donation of paddy harvested by the land owners to the temple. The temple was receiving 1,600 Mudi rice in the form of donation.
The inscription is written in Kannada and has 47 lines. It has been installed near the temple and has been preserved.
