Mangalorean swimmer launches CPR training for fishermen

August 2: : Sanketh Bengre, 29, a swimmer has launched cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for Mangalorean fishermen. Sanketh has already trained about 130 fishermen from 17 boats during the last week of July.

Deep sea fishing began on Thursday, August 1. Since Fishing is a very hard  activity and fishermen are out in the sea during odd hours during the day for a minimum of 10 days. Sanket mentioned that there have been instances where fishermen have lost their lives in recent years due to heart attacks or drowning.
Sanketh is going to boats anchored at the Old Port and training a batch of 10 fishermen at a time. He provides live demonstration using a mannequin, so that fishermen understand emergency situations better, and know what action has to be taken during such situations. Each training session takes about an hour. CPR is an emergency lifesaving procedure performed during heart attacks or drowning situations. It combines chest compression often with artificial ventilation.
Sanketh is a businessman. He has represented India at international swimming competitions, and has participated in Rescue 2012-World Life Saving Championship, Australia, during which he was exposed to beach life saving skills.  He has trained children from the fishermen community in Bengre on beach life saving skills and surfing. Along with this Sanket has conducted beach cleaning drives involving the local community, especially children.
Sanket aims to train fishermen from at least 4-5 boats every week.
