New System to Monitor Water Level in Rajakaluves Introduced in Mangalore to Prevent Flooding

A new system to monitor the water level in rajakaluves has been introduced in Mangalore. Cameras with water level sensors have been installed near all major rajakaluves in Mangalore city, and thereby the authorities can act on time, whenever there is a possibility of flooding.

The city has witnessed flooding in many low-lying areas in the past few years, when the stormwater drain overflowed from rajakaluves. Following this, the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) took the initiative to install CCTV cameras with water level monitoring sensors. The authority has already installed CCTV cameras with water level monitoring sensors, at nearly 20 places in the city, including Kottara, Pumpwell, Jappinamogaru, Subhash Nagar, Attavar, Kodialbail, Bejai, Kudroli, Pachanady, Kodikal, Chitrapur and Malemar. The cameras and sensors will send images and videos of the rajakaluves, to the disaster management authority, on a real-time basis. The authority in turn will alert the Dakshina Kannada district administration, and the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), in case of any increase in the level of water, in any of the rajakaluves.
