The 60-year-old Sri Vishwaprasannatheertha Sripada of Pejavara Matha, descended into a 40-foot deep well to rescue a kitten that had fallen in. The incident occurred at Muchlukodu temple in Udupi on June 18, Sunday. Swamiji who is known for his love for animals, has won all praise for his humanitarian act.
Swamiji had arrived at the Subrahmanya Muchlugodu Temple from Chennai on Sunday afternoon. It was then they came to know from the temple staff that a kitten had fallen into the well. Initially, swamiji attempted to coax the cat into a bucket suspended within the well, but the efforts proved unsuccessful. Unfazed by the setback, Swamiji wrapped a khavishati (traditional cloth) around his waist, and descended into the well of about 5 feet diameter using a rope. Swamiji placed the cat in the bucket and guided the onlookers to hoist it upwards. However, as the bucket ascended, the frightened cat leaped out, finding refuge on another ledge of the well. Swamiji held the cat securely in hand and courageously climbed up one floor at a time. Upon reaching the top, swamiji gently tossed the cat upward, allowing it to escape to safety.
