School vehicle drivers withdraw strike: MLA Vedavyas Kamath Intervenes

July 13: It is known that school vehicle drivers had gone on an indefinite strike saying the police are being harsh on the drivers and also abuse them. This had caused a lot of inconvenience to the parents and the students.
Members of the Dakshina Kannada District Schoolchildren Vehicle Drivers’ Association have withdrawn their strike, as MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath has promised to meet the police commissioner at the earliest. Honorary president of the association, Sunil Kumar Bajal mentioned that vehicles ferrying schoolchildren will function from Saturday.
He mentioned that the police were booking cases on drivers even when children ferried were within the permitted numbers. He even stated that they had pressurized the MLA Vedavyas Kamath to intervene and solve the issue.
He said that the drivers work from 6.30 am to 5 pm and have been eking out a living by ferrying these schoolchildren. If the number of students are limited to eight, as directed by the court, they will be compelled to hike the fees, which, in turn, will inconvenience parents.
Mangalore Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil convened a meeting with  the members of association on Friday promised to redress their grievances, after the members had aired their grievances.
