
As many as 570 candidates were trained as fish and seafood processing technicians under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka till the end of 2024. In addition, 636 candidates were trained in tourism and hospitality sector under PMKY in the district till 2024.
Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary said that Skill India Programme comprising PMKVY 4.0 (restructured one), Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and the scheme for support to Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) aims to equip youth with industry-relevant skills tailored to regional needs, across India, since 2022-23. A demand-driven approach has been adopted for selecting job roles, which are identified based on industrial requirements and regional needs to ensure alignment with local economic opportunities. The details of skilling are maintained at the district level under PMKVY 4.0., he said.
Efforts are being made to collaborate with key industries to provide training in shipbuilding and marine tourism in Mangaluru. Under the PMKVY 4.0 scheme, 14 training centres have been empanelled in Dakshina Kannada for imparting training in two sectors — 90 persons trained in aerospace and aviation sector, and 191 persons trained in IT-ITeS sector as on December 31, 2024.
