Stone pelting at Kundapura Police station: 4 arrested
May 18: A group of people on Thursday night surrounded Kundapur Rural Police Station and threw stones on the roof for taking stringent action against illegal sand miners. Sridhar Naik serving as sub inspector of the police station had seized a Maruthi Omni engaged in illegal sand transportin Kandlur on Thursday. After the car was shifted to the police station at around 10.20 pm, over 15 miscreants arrived in bikes and argued with the police on releasing the vehicle.
The group, led by Shahid Bette (30), Zakir Hussain (32), Shakir (24) and Tabrez Saheb (26) of Kandlur village, began throwing stones at the police station. It is suspected that the youth pelted stones at the station for seizing the vehicle engaged in illegal sand mining. While four youth were arrested and 15 of them–Naushad, Museen, Shahid, Nadeem, Karani Shahid, Rayan, Bilal, Mansoor, Mohammed, Sadaqat, Jeffry, Abdulla, Fahad, Naheem and Hamidsari of Kandlur fled from the spot.
Realising the gravity of situation, additional police personnel were rushed to the spot. Udupi Superintendent of police Nisha James also rushed to the spot. She said that investigation to ascertain the owner of seized car has been initiated.
