Street Vendors Littering & Disfiguring The Area Near Town Hall: MCC Officials Take Action

A drive against the footpath vendors was carried out by the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) and police onApril 16, Sunday. Water was sprayed on the former from inside the town hall, leading to tension in the area. This led to scuffle between footpath vendors and the officials.

MCC commissioner said that the drive was being carried out to clear the footpath near the town hall, where vendors have been littering and disfiguring the place. It takes at least two days for the MCC workers to clean the areas near the town hall where footpath vendors carry out business on Sundays. They occupy the entire area and litter the place, causing inconvenience to pedestrians.

BK Imthiyaz, honorary president of the Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors Welfare Association, said that the vendors should be allowed to conduct business. Conducting raids without the knowledge of MCC’s Town Vending Committee is also a violation. He said the MCC should identify street vendors and issue them identity cards. Further, frame policies for the street vendors to conduct business in city, weekly markets and festival grounds, he added.
