‘Suvarna Tribhuja’ fishing boat tragedy: Families of Fishermen say no to compensation

May 12: The families of seven fishermen who were on fishing boat, ‘Suvarna Tribhuja’, have refused to accept the compensation of Rs 10 lac each released by the state government. The state government had released Rs 10 lac out of which Rs 6 lac from Karnataka State Fishermen’s Calamity Relief Fund and Rs 4 lac from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund on May 9.
To accept the compensation the families need to execute an indemnity bond. The compensation is paid only in case of death and no department has legally announced the death of the fishermen. Incase the fishermen return alive, the compensation amount will have to be returned to the government.
