Team of Doctors from Kasturba Hospital re-attach boy’s hand

April 2: An 18-year-old boy was shifted to Kasturba hospital on February 27, with one hand nearly severed at the wrist and hanging by the skin. The condition followed an accident when the boy was working on an electric saw. After visiting two hospitals, he was shifted to the Kasturba hospital.  A team of doctors from the orthopaedic department of the Kasturba Hospital succeeded in restoring his amputated hand.
The boy was in a state of severe shock when he was admitted but was  revived through blood transfusion. After obtaining consent from the relatives, surgeons Dr Jayakrishnan K N, Dr Keerthan and Dr Chaitan reattached the amputated hand under guidance of Dr Ashwath Acharya and Dr Prof S P Mohanty.  The anaesthesia support for the surgeons was provided by Dr Nisha Sara Jacob and Dr Shweta Sinha.
The soft tissue defect over the wrist was covered with an abdominal flap after three days. As a result, the boy’s hand was attached to the abdomen for three weeks before being separated.
