The Road to Mangalore Central Railway Station Likely to be Named After Freedom Fighter From Tulunad
The road to Mangalore Central Railway Station is all set to be named after freedom fighter Ammembala Balappa. The council of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has sent a proposal in this regard, submitted by former mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar, to the standing committee on town planning.
The proposal has already been cleared by the MCC council and the same will be processed as per the guidelines of government circular. As per the government circular of 2006, the proposal will be verified by MCC’s standing committee on town planning. Later, it will be published in newspapers to invite objections and suggestions and the same will be sent to the government for approval through the council.
Ammembala Balappa, who was born on February 23,1922, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi took part in the freedom struggle during the Quit India Movement in 1942. He hailed from a rural family in Bantwal and was an inspiration for the youth. He actively participated in the freedom struggle and also took up several initiatives for the welfare of the poor and Dalits. He founded the first Tulu publication ‘Tulu Siri’ in 1970 and he played a key role in the drafting of land reforms law during the tenure of D Devaraj Urs government. Day celebration.
