This College In Mangalore Has Come Up With The Idea of ‘Terrace Garden’: Know More

October 30: The administration of Milagres College has come up with the idea of ‘terrace garden’, in order to inculcate a sense of responsibility in the students regarding the environment.

With the character of caring in community, awareness on the matter can be instilled in students through hands-on activities related to the environment. The terrace garden activity was initiated by Rev Fr Michael L Santhumayor, the principal, who dedicated his time to set up the garden and nurture it. As a result of his work, a wide variety of plants has been grown. The principal also motivated the students of the Eco and Life Science Association to involve whole-heartedly in this activity. The terrace garden contains a wide variety of vegetables such as ladies finger, bottle gourd, snake gourd, pumpkin, double beans and brinjal.
Biocompost prepared on campus by utilising the waste generated from the food production laboratory of the BSc, BHS and FND students is used as manure. This not only helps produce chemical-free manure but also provides a way to utilise the organic waste generated in the College. The students are therefore educated on the importance of waste management also, said the principal.
A training session was held by the principal, who illustrated the importance of terrace gardening and waste recycling by biocomposting. The students were taken on a round of the terrace garden, where they were explained the varieties of plants being grown in the garden. The students were also encouraged to utilise the open spaces to start cultivating and spreading greenery around the campus.
