This Government School in Dakshina Kannada Plans to Set up a Butterfly Park on Its Campus: Click to Know

The government higher primary school at Moodambail in Bantwal taluk was successful in the rearing of caterpillars to adult moths/ butterflies and has planned to have a dedicated butterfly park on its campus. A total of 22 students from the school participated in the Caterpillar Rearing Project, organised by Mumbai-based NGO iNaturewatch Foundation. The school stood first in the country with the rearing of 52 caterpillars that turned into adults. Now the foundation has come forward to help the school with setting up a butterfly park.

Aravinda Kudla, school headmaster, said that the project gave children an opportunity to undergo practical lessons and get a glimpse of research at a young age. Our school was adjudged the best school with the highest number of caterpillars reared and hatched into butterflies/moths. During the project, students also recorded information about the plant where caterpillars were found. They also fed leaves from the same plants to the caterpillars. With the help of teachers, they also photographed various findings and changes in the caterpillars. The findings were sent to the organizers for research purposes.

NGO was founded by Dr V Shubhalaxmi, who is known as the moth lady of India, had conceptualized the project. After knowing about the interests, the foundation has come forward to help them set up the butterfly park. It will provide all types of saplings that attract butterflies. The work will begin soon.
