April 2: National Highways Authority of India’s (NHAI) has requested DK administration to close the old arch bridge across River Phalguni on National Highway 66 at Kulur (Kulur Bridge) used by  traffic from Udupi to Mangalore for safety reasons.
The Kulur Bridge which was constructed in 1952 has now become a safety hazard. The bridge at present can take up to 30 tonnes of load with vehicular speeds restricted to 15-20 kmph.
Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel had sought its reconstruction because of the poor condition. The new bridge would be part of six-laning the Nanthoor-NITK Surathkal Port Connectivity Project Road which will be taken up by New Mangalore Port Road Company. Construction of the new bridge would take minimum 18-24 months, which includes the tendering process.
Light vehicles from Udupi to Mangalore may continue to use the old arch bridge whereas, Commercial vehicles with more than 16-wheels, may be diverted via Surathkal-Kana-Bajpe-KPT.
DK DC  S. Sasikanth Senthil said that the administration will take a decision to close down the old arch bridge (Kulur bridge) for traffic after counting of votes of the Lok Sabha elections which will take place at Surathkal (NITK).
