Thumbe water flows into drains due to leakage in sump
The water from Thumbe dam, are first being made potable at the water purification plant and then is stored in tanks before being supplied to houses. Activist G K Bhat told DH that water from two sumps located near the Horticulture Department, Bendoor, having 50 lakh litres capacity each is pumped to different tanks of the Corporation.
Activists have accused the Mangalore City Corporation of failing to address the leakage of lakhs of litres of water from these tanks. Due to this the water from the Thumbe dam, which has been made potable at the cost of the public, is flowing down the drains on a daily basis.
MCC junior engineer Richard said that the quantity of leak is merely around 5% of the total quantity of the water which is stored in the sump and the water sump could not be shut down as there is no alternative facility to store water. He even said that if the pumping is stopped, the water supply to many regions will be affected.
