The Udupi district police conducted a massive drive to inspect school vehicles across the district after receiving a tip-off about unsafe driving practices by drivers of these vehicles, including those from private institutions as well as those owned and operated by educational institutions. The drive was undertaken in all police station limits, wherein five police Inspectors and 30 SIs participated, along with police personnel, from 7 a.m. to noon.

During the drive, as many as 930 school vehicles were checked. Of these cases, one involved drink-driving, 39 involved improper documents, 48 involved overloading, and 194 involved other categories of offences. The district police filed 282 separate cases and collected a fine of ₹1.58 lakh from them.

The Udupi police issued a strict caution to school managements, as well as owners of institution-owned and operated vehicles, to implement all safety measures as per the prevailing rules within one week, as part of the inspection drive.
