Udupi Sarees Are Now Available on a Dedicated Website: Click to Know

The sale of Udupi saris, which was so far restricted to social media marketing, has now been upgraded on a dedicated website www.udupisaree.org that was launched on September 1. This is expected to give a boost to sales, and support the weavers of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. There are about 35 saris on display, and the website also provides in-depth information about the Udupi saris, weaver societies, testimonials and other news and updates.

The major profit share generated from the website will be utilised to give wage support and other benefits to weavers. The trust is giving wage compensation to newly trained weavers for the last one year, and supporting weavers in their medical and other needs.

Udupi saris are woven on Malabar frame looms introduced by the Basel Mission in the 19th century. The saris have a plain or chequered design on the body, with contrasting colour on the pallu and border. In order to make Udupi saris eco-friendly, natural dyeing has been introduced, and a full-fledged natural dye unit is being established in the Talipady Society by the trust, with support from the SELCO Foundation.
